Which type of Piano is for you?
Almost since the first piano was built, manufacturers have been trying to make it smaller. This has been no easy task, because good tone in a piano
requires certain minimums in length of string and size of soundboard.First, the size of the original grand piano was cut by the use of stronger frames
and an innovative system of cross-stringing, Then, in the late 1800's, the upright or vertical piano was developed, sending the space-consuming bulk of
the instrument up along the wall, rather than out across the floor. This was so successful that today some larger professional-quality uprights can have
equal or better tone quality than many small grands. Eventually, even the upright was shortened, and in some cases ingenious scale design compensates in
tone for the loss of size. Still, this rule of thumb generally applies: the larger the piano, the better the tone.
What is a 'stencil' brand?
A stencil brand is a piano produced by manufacturers bearing usually a German sounding name. Most salespeople will not tell you where they are made or simply
say they are made to "dealer's specifications." To support the credibility of stencil brands, the pitch of "German technology" is frequently used by their
salesmen. What they typically won't reveal to you is that these pianos don't carry a valid manufacturer's warranty backed by the factory itself. This fact not
only can severely limit the resale value of such instruments in the future, but — should the business shut down itself — may well leave you stranded with no
warranty at all!
Which dealer should I buy from?
Always look for a reliable store with good reputation. Recommendations from teacher or technician are valuable. In addition, make sure to do a thorough research
on the store regarding store history, programmes availability, and service or repair capability. Always look for a store that has its own repair shop and full
time technician/service team. Your feeling and impression for a store and its overall service is extremely important. Remember you're in for the long run!
Trust develops right from the beginning. And carries on from there — for years to come!
